CONNECTING WITH TREEHOUSE

Summer Time and the Reading is Easy

Well, here we are, well into June, and the weather is a little cool for my liking. Yet the days are getting longer and the downtown streets are jumping with activity. Tree House Books has a great selection of summer reads for beach and porch reading. Check out our display of NPR and Oprah recommendations, there is something for everyone.
I attended the Book Convention in LA in early June and was excited to meet some of my favorite authors, including Judy Blume and Ray Bradbury. Two of my top picks from the show are "Story of a Marriage" by Andrew Sean Greer and "War Journal" by Richard Engel. (See the review section). The big news at the show was the unveiling of a new initiative that will replace "Book Sense". The tag line is "Indie Bound" and I am thrilled with the message, "Independent business for Independent minds". There is a grassroots movement afoot that is piggybacking on the sustainability/green initiatives. People are realizing that by shopping at their independent, locally owned businesses, they are contributing to maintaining a vibrant community. Consumers are craving connection and hard facts point to the fact that dollars spent at independents stay in the community. Stop in the store and check out the free giveaways(bookmarks, bookplates) and the hot new graphics in the "IndieBound" displays.
As a result of this new initiative, I have spearheaded the creation of a Holland Independent Business Alliance. it is in the planning stages, but watch the media for our "Buy Local campaign.
If you have any interest in helping out, please contact me at the store. I am so thankful to our loyal customers who appreciate the positive impact independent business has on the community and on all of our lives.
Happy Summer,
Michele
